Frequently Asked Questions

Budget $15,000-$30,000 in startup costs. The biggest expense is insurance ($8,000-$15,000/year for new authorities). Other costs: FMCSA application $300, BOC-3 $30-$50, UCR $176, HVUT $100-$550, IRP $1,000-$3,000, ELD $200-$500, drug testing $150-$200, and truck lettering $100-$300.
From application to first load is typically 4-6 weeks. The MC number application takes 3-4 weeks to process, then your insurance carrier must file the BMC-91 form, which takes another 1-2 weeks to appear in FMCSA's system. You cannot legally haul freight until your authority status shows 'Authorized' on FMCSA's SAFER system.
New owner-operators often benefit from leasing on first to learn the business, build savings, and establish a safety record before going independent. Your own authority means higher earning potential but also higher costs, more paperwork, and full responsibility for compliance. Many successful independents spent 1-2 years leased on before getting their own MC.
