Most new drivers say backing into tight dock spaces and managing their HOS clock are the biggest challenges. Backing improves rapidly with practice — try to arrive at truck stops early so you can pick easier spots. HOS management is about planning: know where you will park before you start driving, and never assume you can find parking at the last minute.
There is no shame in it. Most dock workers and shipping clerks will give you extra patience and guidance if you politely mention it is your first week. They would rather help you back in safely than deal with dock damage. Say something like: 'I am new and want to make sure I do this right — any tips for backing into this dock?'
Park at a well-lit, busy truck stop. Lock your doors. Use blackout curtains for privacy and sleep. Many new drivers feel anxious the first few nights — this is completely normal and passes quickly. Bring comfortable bedding, earplugs (truck stops are noisy), and something familiar from home to help you relax.
